Samuel David Derr, 75 of Youngwood passed peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday January 18, 2025 at Presbyterian Hospital. He was born on March 22, 1949 in West Newton to the late David and Kathleen (McCall) Derr. Sam was a graduate of Sewickley High School class of 1968 and shortly after enlisted in the U.S. Army, and was a proud veteran serving in the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, Sam met Cheryl Foglia and as they say the rest was history. For the next 50 years, together they built their family with strong traditional values and endless love in Youngwood. Sam embraced his role as an exceptional father as the baseball coach and scoutmaster, always being active in all events and activities of his children’s lives. When he was promoted to grandfather, he naturally fell into this role with ease, always supporting his grandchildren in all their endeavors never missing a beat. A true family man, Sam was always present. He held a strong faith throughout his entire life, and was a member of Holy Cross Parish, where he was instrumental in organizing and setting up for the church festivals, counted money, was a caretaker for the church, and an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 8452. Sam loved to golf and enjoyed traveling to Lancaster as well as Siesta Key Florida. He leaves a legacy of devotion and loyalty to his family, country and community, and his daily presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Sam is survived by his beloved wife and best friend Cheryl Derr; his children Jeremy Derr and his wife Jessica, and Janine Hays and her husband Chris; cherished grandchildren Jacob and Madison Hays, Alexander Derr, and Joshua, Andrew, and Alex Meier; sisters Etta Roderick, Carolyn Martz, and Nora Hubble. Please join us to celebrate and honor Sam’s life with a viewing on Tuesday January 21, 2025 from 2-4 & 5-7 p.m. at ASHLEY D. X. NYE CREMATION CARE & FUNERAL HOME INC. 408 Depot St. Youngwood.
