Hugh "Jim" James Hawkey, 77, of Mount Pleasant, chose to catch a ride on an eagle's wings to eternity on February 13, 2025, with his family cheering him on from below. Born on October 16, 1947, in the lively city of Pittsburgh, PA, Jim was nurtured from his earliest days by the late William and Rosemarie Knauss Hawkey, his devoted adoptive parents. Surrounded by his 38 foster siblings, Jim's childhood was like living in a bustling sitcom full of camaraderie and kinship. A master machinist with a heart that beat for locomotives and a mind captivated by military history, Jim's passions could rival the most ardent enthusiasts. He served his country with distinction during the Vietnam War as a proud active duty member of the United States Army from 1966 to 1969 and remained in the Army reserves until 1972. After his honorable service, Jim's heart found its true north in Wendy Stevenson Hawkey. They tied the knot on March 6, 1981, in the sun-soaked locale of Largo, Florida. Together, they didn't just build a family—they crafted a marvelously mixed and mighty tribe. His children by blood and marriage, preceded in death by Donnie and survived by Mike, Jamie, Darcie, Jimmy, and Dawn. Jim was the epitome of devotion—a loving husband, a stellar father, a doting grandparent, and an elated great-grandparent. His legacy will be carried on by his large clan, woven into the fabric of each generation. Jim never encountered a stranger; he had a knack for striking up conversations with just about anyone. His absence will be profoundly felt by his near and dear ones, as well as the many friends and acquaintances he gathered throughout his life's adventures. He left behind a treasure trove of friendships and cherished memories. Please join us to celebrate and honor Jim’s life with a viewing on Monday February 17, 2024 from 5-8 pm and Tuesday February 18, 2025 from 10 am until time of service at 11 am at ASHLEY D. X.
