Fred Sovyak of Greensburg Pennsylvania, departed to be with Our Lord on September 26, 2021 Fred was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 30, 1935.  His parents were Harry Sovyak, Sr. and Mary Tovcimac.  As a 1954 graduate of Oliver High School, he lettered in swimming , which earned him a scholarship to the University of Wyoming.  Fred received a BS degree in mechanical engineering.  He was a member of the Society of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Society. While employed by West Penn Power, he earned a Masters of Business Administration from Gannon University.  He was a Registered Professional Engineer and a licensed Real Estate Representative.

He retired from West Penn Power with 42 years of service, having worked in various professional and managerial positions.  While working at the Greensburg headquarters, he met and married Marlene Mahan in 1959.  A beautiful marriage lasted until Marlene passed away in May 1996. They has 2 children, Chris Allen Sovyak, of Culpeper, Virginia and Jodi Lynn Young , deceased. He has 2 granddaughters, Kylie Melissa Young and Shelby Ellison Young of Downingtown, PA.

After service in the U.S. Army and while working for West Penn Power, Fred was active in the communities in which he lived.  He was past presidents of the Rotary Clubs of Bellefonte and Ridgway, Pa.  He was awarded the “Paul Harris Fellow” award for community service.  Fred was active in the United Way Campaign, having served as Director and General fund Chairman in Ridgway, PA; Executive and Industrial Fund Chairman, United Way for Centre County and Fund Chairman for West Penn Power, Cabin Hill, Greensburg.  Fred also served Educational Director, Penn State Dubois campus; North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Committee member; Board of Directors, Kittanning, YMCA; Committee Chairman, Boy Scouts, and various committees of the Westminster  Presbysterian Church .

Other memberships include : BPOE Elks, Ridgeway ,Pa; Alumni associations of Penn State University, University of Wyoming, and Gannon University.  He also joined the Nittany Lion Club, the Wyoming Cowboy Club , Norvelt Golf Club, Hecla Sportman’s Club, Greensburg Art Center and the Roudy Gang Bicycle Club.

Fred was predeaceased by his first wife, Marlene, daughter, Jodi  Sovyak Young, his parents,  and 6 siblings: Anna, Mary, Agnes, Mary, Alice and Harry Jr.

Fred is survived second wife, Rosemary Sobolak, his son, Chris Allen Sovyak, his grand children, Kylie Melissa Young and Shelby Ellison Young of Downingtown, PA. Michael Young , son-in-law.  Step children, Krista Berquist( Marc Robinson)  Monica (Berquist) Budzinski (Mark)and Jared Berquist(Danielle) and 5 step- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Please join us in celebrating Fred’s life with a Funeral service on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbysterian Church 1120 Harvey Avenue Greensburg, PA 15601. Please go directly to the church.
