Edward Sterba Obituary

Edward J. Sterba, 90 of Foxtown died Thursday October 28, 2021 at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital.  Ed was born May 17, 1931, the youngest son of the late Steve and Mary DeWalt Sterba.  He was a steadfast hard worker his entire life and, retired from Robertshaw Controls after 43 years of dedicated service.  Ed was a jokster or one maybe would affectionately say an “agitator” who always brought lively amusement to the group. A man devoted to his community and family, Ed was a former member of Mt. Pleasant volunteer Fireman’s Social Club, Hempfield Hunt Club, and lifetime member of The Youngwood Moose #23, where he loved to kick back and watch his beloved Steelers and Pirates play.  He held a fierce faith in the Lord and was an active parishioner of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Youngwood, serving as an usher and formerly holding a position on the Church Council.  Above all the greatest role Ed’s life was the one he held within his family, which he built on a foundation of love and traditional values, with his wife of 50 years Eileen. They spent summers at the family cottage on the Youghiogheny River Dam, with endless memories and tales of adventures with his brothers and children; hunting and fishing.  He will be so deeply missed for his most giving tender heart, passion for living each day to the fullest, and humility he carried throughout his entire life.   Ed is survived by his wife Eileen Gorton Shaffer Sterba; his son Edward Jr. (Lisa); daughters Cynthia Shaffer Lauffer (Bob) and Lisa Shaffer Smith (Tim); four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several sister-in laws, brother in-laws; and a host of nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Nancy Schrock Sterba; his son Scott A. Sterba; sister Christine Sterba Busonick; and three brothers, Steve, Clarence, and John Sterba.  Please join us to celebrate Ed’s life on Tuesday November 2, 2021 with a viewing from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at THE ASHLEY D. X. NYE CREMATION CARE & FUNERAL HOME INC. 408 Depot St. Youngwood, PA 15697.  Additional viewing on Wednesday November 3, 2021 from 10-11 a.m. St. Luke’s Lutheran Church 126 N. Fourth St. Youngwood, PA 15697, with service to follow at 11 a.m. with The Reverend Peter E. Nordby presiding. Burial to take place immediately following service, at Westmoreland Memorial Park with a white dove release.  In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.
